Frequently Asked Questions
Will I go to prison for drink driving?
Prison (custody) is typically reserved for highest bracket (e.g., breath over 120µg) or very high-risk repeat offenders. Most first-time offences result in a fine and a driving ban.
What is High Risk Offender Scheme?
If convicted with a very high reading (2.5x limit), refused to provide a specimen, or have two drink-drive convictions in 10 years, you are a High Risk Offender. You must pass a medical exam to get your licence back.
What does DDRS course do?
The Drink-Drive Rehabilitation Scheme (DDRS) is a course offered to offenders. If you pay for and complete it, court will reduce your ban period by up to 25%.
What is an endorsement code?
The most common code is DR10 for drink-driving. This endorsement stays on your driving licence for 11 years from date of conviction.
How is the fine calculated?
Fines are usually based on a percentage of your "relevant weekly income" (after tax, before rent/mortgage). The percentage increases with the severity of the offence (Band A, B, or C).
