Best Prayer Training Methods in OSRS

  • Burying bones: The simplest method, mostly used by Free-to-play players or early game Ironmen.
  • Gilded altar: A safe, player-owned house method that grants 350% XP when two incense burners are lit.
  • Chaos altar: Located deep in the Wilderness, this altar offers the same 350% XP as a Gilded altar, but with a 50% chance to not consume the bone. This effectively doubles your Prayer XP per bone, making it extremely cost-effective.
  • Ectofuntus: Grants 400% XP but requires significant preparation (grinding bones and collecting slime).
  • Ensouled heads: A cheaper alternative that requires Arceuus spellbook magic and combat.
  • Offering spells: Demonic and Sinister Offering spells allow you to train Prayer efficiently during Slayer tasks or while bankstanding.
  • Blessed bone shards: A newer method used at the Libation Bowl in Varlamore, offering high XP rates with either blessed or sunfire wines.

Cheapest vs Fastest Prayer Training

Choosing a method usually comes down to your budget versus your available time. The Chaos altar is universally the cheapest method for main accounts because it halves the number of bones you need to buy. However, it carries the risk of player killers (PKers). For the fastest training without risk, using Superior dragon bones on a Gilded altar or using Offering spells yields massive XP rates but costs significantly more GP per XP. A balanced approach is often using Dragon bones or Wyrm bones at the Chaos altar.

Calculator Assumptions

  • Gilded altar: Assumes both incense burners are lit.
  • Chaos altar: Assumes the 50% bone saving effect is active (effectively doubling the base materials). Actual results may vary due to Wilderness risks.
  • Ectofuntus: Does not account for the time spent gathering buckets of slime or grinding bones.
  • Offering spells: Base cost estimates include the approximate cost of runes (e.g., Wrath runes).
  • Manual prices: Due to Grand Exchange fluctuations, you should update the item price manually for the most accurate current estimate.
  • XP/hour: Rates are estimates based on average player efficiency. You can edit this value to match your actual speed.

FAQs

What is the fastest way to train Prayer in OSRS?

The fastest way is using Superior dragon bones at a Gilded altar or Chaos altar, or using Demonic/Sinister Offering spells. These methods can exceed 500k-1M XP per hour depending on your click intensity.

What is the cheapest way to train Prayer in OSRS?

The Chaos altar in the Wilderness is the cheapest method because it gives a 50% chance to not consume the bone you offer. Ensouled heads are also very cheap but require combat.

How much does 99 Prayer cost?

The cost to 99 Prayer varies wildly. Using Dragon bones at the Chaos altar typically costs between 40m to 60m GP, while safer and faster methods can cost well over 100m GP. Use the calculator above to see exact current costs.

Is the Chaos altar worth using?

Yes, it effectively cuts your GP cost in half compared to a Gilded altar. Even if you die occasionally to PKers, the amount of GP saved on bones heavily outweighs the losses.

Should I use Gilded altar or Ectofuntus?

Gilded altar is heavily preferred because it is significantly faster and less tedious. The Ectofuntus provides slightly more XP per bone (400% vs 350%) but the preparation time usually makes it inefficient for mains.

Can Ironman players use this Prayer calculator?

Yes! Select the Ironman account type. You can set item prices to 0 if you gather them yourself, and the calculator will simply tell you how many materials and how much time you need.

Why does my cost estimate differ from the Grand Exchange price?

Prices in OSRS change constantly. If the default price in the calculator is outdated, simply click the 'Item Price' field and type the current GE value.

What Prayer level should I aim for first?

If you are rushing a combat unlock, level 43 (Protect from Melee) or level 70 (Piety) usually matters more than calculating all the way to 99 straight away.
